Alcinéo implements Mastercard specification MCL 4.0
Earlier this year, Mastercard made available their latest specification for contactless card readers, MCL 4.0.
Payment terminal providers can currently submit their new products to terminal type approval with MCL 3.1.4 or MCL 4.0.
Our team has implemented Mastercard specification MCL 4.0 to our Kardia software suite, and delivers the latest kernel version to our customers to perform the official testing applying the latest requirements from Mastercard.
What's new with Mastercard specification MCL 4.0 ?
The new MCL contactless specification implements two EMV® bulletins :
EMV Specification Bulletin 301 -> Update to the “ParseAndStoreCardResponse” routine for the handling of proprietary tags
EMV Specification Bulletin 272 -> Update to Date Management Requirements
The new specification also mentions EMV Kernels C2 and C8 and describes the behavior expected from the reader when MCL, EMVC2 or EMVC8 kernels are present, according information retrieved from the card.
Specification applicability
This new version of MCL 4.0 must be integrated to new contactless card readers submitted to official type approval as of Monday April 1st 2025.
Together with the update of the specification, Mastercard has edited an updated version of the Testing Environment document and Product Registration Form, to reflect the changes introduced in the new MCL 4.0.
During the migration period vendors can submit contactless terminals to MCL 3.1.4 type approval up until March 31st 2025, but preferably payment device providers should start implementing MCL 4.0 at the earliest.
Available in Kardia payment suite
MCL 4.0 is now available in Alcinéo Kardia payment suite. Our mission is to deliver the most up-to-date products and following the latest requirements from international payment standards.
